Our History and Background
The Humboldt Park Vocational Education Center (HPVEC) of Wilbur
Wright College, one of the City Colleges of Chicago, is a community-
oriented institution whose primary mission is to provide both short and
long-term training in the fields of business, health and manufacturing.
These training programs teach the necessary skills for employment and
career advancement. The HPVEC also strives to fulfill its part in the
broader mission of its parent college: “Wilbur Wright College is a
learning-centered, multi-campus institution of higher education offering
students of diverse backgrounds, talents and abilities, a quality education
leading to baccalaureate transfer, career development, and/or personal
development.” Through Wilbur Wright College, the HPVEC is accredited by the North Central
Association of Colleges and schools and is approved by the Illinois Community College Board
and the Illinois Office of Education, Department of Adult, Vocational and Technical Education. |

The Center’s history goes back to October of 1982, when the City Colleges Board of Trustees
authorized the Chancellor to identify and appropriate a location for an adult learning center in
the Humboldt Park community, even though the concept had been contemplated for several
years prior. After numerous meetings with community leaders, including Illinois State Senator
Miguel del Valle, and working with the City of Chicago Public Building Commission, the
acquisition of a site for the new facility was finally accomplished in 1989. Nearly six years later,
during the spring of 1995, the Humboldt Park Vocational Center opened its doors for the first
time, offering adult education basic skills and some limited vocational training. In the year
2005, the Center celebrated its 10th Anniversary. We are proud of how much we
have grown during the first decade and have developed programs to meet the needs of the
communities we serve. |
