CCC Placement Tests

Placement Test General Information

New and returning students without valid placement scores or passing grades are required to take the placement test before registering. The ALEK math placement test determines where a student should begin Math classes and/or classes that require specific math-level eligibility. The Reading to Write Placement test determines where a student should begin English classes and/or courses that require english-level eligibility. Placement test scores are valid for one calendar year.

Prior to taking the placement tests new students must apply for admission and receive an email from with their student ID number, username and password. This information will be used at the ccc online student portal, Both placement tests are located within the student portal. If you have questions, please ask the Truman Admissions Team.

Since the placement test is very important, we strongly encourage you to review placement test preparation materials, accessible through the links to the right under ‘Other Resources'. Truman College also offers free placement test preparation through our Tutoring Center. Preparing with the help of our trained tutors is a great way to make sure you do you best!

Important Test Information

The ALEKS math placement test can be taken up to five times in a calendar year and is untimed.

The Reading to Write placement test can only be taken once a calendar year, and must be completed in 2.5 hours.

If you encounter techical difficulty with your placement test, please contact the Truman Testing Center.

We encourage you to take the placement tests as soon as possible. Since the test is online, you can take it 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. However, we do welcome you to use our testing center to ensure a quiet and secure space.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need any materials to take the placement test(s)?

In order to ensure that you are able to take the test comfortably and without interruption, you should keep these things handy: ink pens, pencils, paper, a dictionary and your username and password for the student portal. If you are taking the test on campus, also bring your student ID number and your photo ID.

Do I have to take the placement test(s)?

In order to register for classes, you must have completed placement test(s) or been granted a test waiver. You may not be required to take the placement test if you are:

  • A transfer student who has earned a grade of “C” or better in college-level English and/or math or if you have previously earned an Associate’s Degree or higher from an accredited college or university. You must submit an official transcript verifying successful completion. 
  •  A high school graduate with a copy of your ACT or SAT test scores. ACT and SAT test scores are valid for a period of four (4) years. You may obtain a copy of your ACT or SAT test scores by contacting your high school advisor. You can also contact ACT directly at (319) 337-1000 and SAT at 866-756-7346.

I prefer to take the placement test(s) at another City Colleges of Chicago campus. Is that possible?
Yes. You can take the placement test(s) at any one of the City Colleges of Chicago’s Testing Centers, computer labs or libraries. If you have further questions, contact information for campus testing centers is available through the link on the right, ‘Testing Resources Centers.’
