Department Mission

The principle mission of the Art Department at Wright College is to provide a foundation of outstanding technical and conceptual training in the visual arts. Students of diverse backgrounds and goals learn in a supportive environment that embraces cultural and aesthetic diversity .Learning to solve problems in creative ways and respecting individual outcomes are emphasized not only in class but also as lifetime goals.

Goals

  1. Prepare students for completion of the AF A Degree.
  2. Prepare students for transfer to art schools or four-year art departments.
  3. Help students build and present successful portfolios.
  4. Provide students with strong technical training.
  5. Exhibit student work.
  6. Expose students to art forms of diverse cultures.
  7. Teach visual literacy and comprehension.
  8. Encourage creative problem solving.
  9. Provide students with outside portfolio readers.
  10. Track students with regard to portfolio and credit acceptance.
  11. Assess beginning and formal art skills as appropriate to the course.
  12. Help students respect individual abilities, points of view and outcomes.
  13. Teach verbal skills as they apply to art criticism.
  14. Encourage students to visit museums and galleries.
  15. Encourage self-expression in a supportive environment.

Student Learning Outcomes

Students from the Art Department will be able to:

  1. Develop a strong art portfolio for transfer or personal enrichment.
  2. Master technical skills in a variety of art media.
  3. Analyze and compose subject/content using various materials.
  4. Master observational skills.
  5. Develop an appreciation for art forms from diverse cultures.
  6. Demonstrate visual literacy and comprehension.
  7. Effectively write and discuss art issues.
  8. Apply a variety of technology in generating images.
  9. Have a working knowledge of art history and archetypes.
  10. Develop self-expression.
