Department Mission

The Mission of the Wright College Music Department is to provide its students and our community with the opportunity to develop their performing skills, their knowledge of music theory and to inform them and enrich their lives through the knowledge of the aesthetics of music and the pleasure of live performances. To fulfill this mission the program is designed to provide the necessary:  educational, intellectual, cultural and practical as well as the theory skills.

 

The program mission is further defined in the following goals:

  • to have the students acquire as much knowledge of music in theory and practice, enabling them to grow artistically in the field of music as an art and business.

 

  • to provide a professional and supportive environment that will produce a graduate able to successfully transfer to a higher level institutions.

 

  • to provide an environment in which the student feels comfortable to learn and practice an instrument.

 

  • To have the student learn so that he may be able to teach others upon the completion of the program.

 

Furthermore, our goal is the success of our students in music. Whether they are completing the first two years of a four year degree, preparing for a new career, upgrading their skills or just trying to learn an instrument or train their ear in music.


Student Learning Outcomes

Below are the learning outcomes that the music student must master in keeping with the program mission and goals. These outcomes serve as a guide to the student toward fulfilling the program goals. The basis of measuring what the student has accomplished relies upon completion of these goals. These outcomes also provide the foundation for specific course objectives, found in the syllabus of every music course.

Upon completing the AFA degree in Music Education and/or Music Performance, the graduate will be able to: 

  1. Improve their abilities to think analyze and apply the course content so that they are able to apply analytical and/or practical approach to music in a more learned fashion.
  2. Attain knowledge to write in four-part harmony, sight read from a score, play an instrument etc.
  3. Demonstrate understanding of styles, musical genres, composers and musical literature.
  4. At the completion of the music program and concurrent academic courses, the student will get an Associate of Fine Arts Degree in Music Education and/or Music Performance, which will enable them to transfer most of the credits to a four-year music school.
